

If you’ve ever tested one finger… then tested another finger right away… and gotten a different blood sugar reading — you’re not imagining it.
This is super common in gestational diabetes (also called gestational diabetes mellitus). And most of the time, it doesn’t mean your blood glucose meter is “broken” or that your body is doing something mysterious. It usually comes down to normal meter variation + hand residue + blood flow + technique.
Let’s break it down in a calm, practical way so you can trust your numbers again.
Yes — typically you’ll see some difference.
A finger prick blood sugar test measures glucose in capillary blood (tiny blood vessels close to the skin), not venous blood like a lab draw. Each finger has slightly different local blood flow, temperature, and circulation in the tissues, so the glucose concentration in a small blood sample can vary a bit.
Also, blood glucose monitors have an acceptable error range. In diabetes science and clinical trials, it’s widely recognized that home meters can be off by a margin (often around 15%). So two readings that aren’t identical can still both be “accurate enough” for self monitoring and diabetes management.
Julija note: I know that’s not emotionally comforting when you’re staring at two different numbers. But it is normal — and we can usually tighten it up with a few fixes.
There’s no single perfect rule, but here’s a helpful way to think about it:
A small difference between fingers can be normal (meter variation + blood flow).
A large jump (especially if it changes what you’d do next) is a sign to troubleshoot: hands, strips, technique, timing, and the device.
If you’re seeing a maximum difference that feels wild (like “these can’t both be real”), start with the steps below.
This one is so common in pregnancy because we’re constantly touching food, snacks, fruit, baby stuff, lotions, and… life.
Even tiny amounts of food, juice, or lotion on your fingertips can cause falsely high blood glucose readings.
Wash your hands with soap and warm water (warm helps blood flow too).
Dry completely. Wet hands can dilute the drop and affect measurement.
If you can’t wash: wipe away the first drop of blood and use the next drop (not perfect, but better than testing on a contaminated finger).
Hand sanitizer isn’t always enough because it can move residue around instead of removing it.
A blood glucose meter needs a proper drop of blood. If the drop is too small (not enough blood), the meter may throw an error or give an inaccurate reading.
Also: try not to squeeze your finger hard to force blood out. When you squeeze, you can mix in tissue fluid (similar to interstitial fluid) and that can affect the glucose reading.
Warm your hands first (warm water, rub hands together).
Let the blood flow naturally.
Use the sides of the fingertip (often less painful and better for a clean blood sample).
Aim for one confident drop, not a tiny smear.
Test strips are more sensitive than most people realize. Humidity, heat, and light can affect them — and then your meter looks “inaccurate” when it’s really the strip.
Check the expiration date on the vial.
Store strips at room temperature.
Avoid humid places (bathrooms are a classic problem).
Keep strips in their original dark vial and close it right away.
If your brand recommends it: don’t use strips more than ~6 months after opening.
Sometimes the “different finger” issue is actually a timing issue.
Blood glucose levels change quickly after a meal, movement, stress, or even a hot shower. So if you test one finger, then test another finger 2–3 minutes later, your blood sugar may genuinely be moving.
Fasting: 95 mg/dL or less
1 hour after meals: 140 mg/dL or less
2 hours after meals: 120 mg/dL or less
If you’re troubleshooting accuracy, try to compare readings when your glucose is relatively stable (not right in the middle of a rapid rise/fall).

A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) measures glucose in interstitial fluid, not capillary blood. That means:
CGM readings can lag behind fingerstick readings (especially after meals, exercise, or stress).
Placement (left arm vs right arm), compression, and sensor age can affect CGM sensor accuracy.
If your CGM and fingerstick don’t match perfectly, that can be normal — especially during fast changes.

If you want the cleanest, most consistent blood sugar reading:
Wash hands with warm soapy water + dry fully
Use a fresh strip (check expiration)
Warm hands, don’t squeeze hard
Get one solid drop
If you retest, retest quickly with the same method
Reach out for medical care advice if:
You keep getting very different results even after washing + new strip + good technique
You feel unwell (thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, blurred vision, or symptoms of low blood sugar)
Your readings don’t match how you feel
You recently started a new medication or changed insulin
