The 4th of July is right around the corner — and if you’re managing gestational diabetes, I promise: celebrating doesn’t mean sitting out on all the fun (or the food).
It just takes a little planning, a little protein… and yes, sometimes a little cottage cheese.
Because here’s the sneaky holiday thing: it’s not usually “one bite of dessert” that gets us — it’s the combo of grazing + mystery carbs + heat/dehydration + being off routine. So let’s set you up to enjoy the day and keep your blood sugar more predictable.

Don’t arrive starving. Have a protein snack before you go.
Protein first, carbs last. (It really can blunt the spike.)
Hydrate like it’s your job. Heat + dehydration can push numbers up.
Julija note: if you do spike anyway… you didn’t “ruin” anything. One number is data, not a grade.
Snack boards are the easiest way to feel festive and balanced — as long as you anchor them with protein.
Build it like this
Protein (pick 2): mozzarella balls, boiled eggs, turkey slices, tuna salad, Greek yogurt dip, cottage cheese dip
Crunch + fiber: cucumbers, bell peppers, radishes, cauliflower, olives
Carb (pick 1 + portion it): berries, watermelon cubes, chickpeas/white beans, a few crackers/seed crisps, a small handful of blue corn chips
Fat boost: nuts, olive oil drizzle, cheese, dip
Color ideas
Red: strawberries/raspberries, cherry tomatoes, red pepper strips, radishes, watermelon cubes
White: mozzarella, eggs, cauliflower, cottage cheese dip, ricotta/cream cheese dollops, blanched almonds/cashews
Blue: blueberries/blackberries, black olives, purple cabbage slaw (blue-ish but counts!)
Bonus: little flag picks = instant “party” with zero extra carbs.
Sweet skewers
Strawberries + blueberries + mini mozzarella
Raspberries + blackberries + cheese cubes
Apple cubes + berries + mozzarella
Savory skewers
Mozzarella + cherry tomatoes + olives
Feta (pasteurized) + peppers + olives
Tomato + cheese + cucumber
Dip idea: Greek yogurt + lemon + garlic powder + salt (so good).
One of my go-to “I want dessert but I also want balance” options.
Base: blended cottage cheese + Greek yogurt + egg + sweetener + vanilla (bake in muffin tins)
Top: strawberries (red) + blueberries (blue) + whipped cream (white)
Julija note: sweeteners are generally considered safe in pregnancy, but everyone’s body responds differently — test your tolerance and see how your numbers react.
Blend:
Cottage cheese
Frozen berries (or other lower-GI fruit)
Vanilla
Sweetener (optional)
4th of July twist: make a strawberry batch + a blueberry batch, then layer with Greek yogurt or whipped cream for red/white/blue vibes.
In a bowl:
Big scoop of cottage cheese or Greek yogurt
Cherry tomatoes / roasted peppers (red)
Blueberries or purple cabbage (blue)
Cucumber + egg or white beans (white)
Olive oil + herbs + salt
Surprisingly delicious on a hot day.
Sweet
Layer blended cottage cheese with:
Blueberries
Strawberries/raspberries
Slivered almonds or shredded coconut
Savory
Layer cottage cheese with:
Cherry tomatoes + pinch of salt
Feta (pasteurized) or white beans
Purple cabbage slaw
Serve in clear cups = cute + portion-controlled.
Whisk egg whites with a splash of milk, bake in muffin tins with:
Red pepper bits / cherry tomatoes
Feta
Chopped purple cabbage (or spinach if you prefer)
Serve warm or cold.
Spread thick Greek yogurt on a lined tray. Top with:
Sliced strawberries
Blueberries/blackberries
Chopped almonds or coconut flakes
Freeze, then break into pieces.
Julija note: this is one of those “tastes like dessert, acts like protein” wins.
Spread a low-carb/whole grain tortilla with:
Cream cheese or blended cottage cheese
Turkey or smoked salmon
Red pepper / tomato
Purple cabbage or thin red onion (blue-ish)
Roll, chill, slice.
Tiny reminder: tortillas can add up fast — portion matters.
Slice red bell peppers in half and fill with tuna salad (Greek yogurt or cottage cheese works great).
Top with everything bagel seasoning or paprika + a few olives.
Bento-style boxes with:
Cheese cubes (white)
Cherry tomatoes or red pepper strips (red)
Blueberries or olives (blue-ish)
Seed crisps / high-fiber crackers (portion!)
Adorable and practical.
Hydration matters — and it’s an easy “festive” win.
Try:
Strawberries + blueberries + mint
Cucumber + watermelon + blueberries
Sparkling water with frozen blackberries + cranberries as “ice cubes”
Skip: sugary drinks + fruit juice (they spike fast). Yes to: water, sparkling water, infused water.
Holidays with GD can feel like a buzzkill — I get it. But you don’t have to miss out. With a few protein-first swaps and some colorful, fun ingredients, you can build a 4th of July spread that feels festive and keeps your blood sugar happier.
And if your numbers aren’t perfect? You’re still doing the work that keeps you and baby safe. That’s the whole point. 💜

1. What’s the easiest way to keep a snack board GD-friendly?
Anchor it with protein first (eggs, cheese, turkey, tuna salad, Greek yogurt dip), then add crunchy veggies, and choose one carb option (like berries or a small portion of crackers/chips).
2. Are “sugar-free” desserts okay in gestational diabetes?
Sometimes, yes — but it depends on the ingredients and your personal tolerance. Some sweeteners and sugar alcohols can still affect blood sugar (and can upset digestion). If you try something new, start with a small portion and see how your numbers respond.
3. What should I do if I spike at a holiday meal?
First: no shame. One number is data, not a grade. Hydrate, move if your care team says it’s okay, and get back to your usual balanced meals/snacks at the next eating time. If you’re seeing repeated highs, check in with your provider.
3. Why does heat make my blood sugar harder to manage?
Heat can contribute to dehydration and stress on the body, which can make blood sugar levels feel less predictable for some people. Drinking water and eating regularly can help.
4. Do I need to avoid all carbs on holidays with gestational diabetes?
No, not at all. You and baby still need carbs. The goal is balance: measured portions, pairing carbs with protein/fat/fiber, and choosing carbs you personally tolerate well.
5. What’s the best “safe plate” at a BBQ with GD?
Start with protein + non-starchy veggies (burger patty/chicken + salad/veggies), then add a measured carb you tolerate (small bun, a little corn, a small scoop of beans/potato salad). Protein first helps.
6. Should I skip the bun / chips / pasta salad completely?
Not necessarily. Many mamas can fit them in with portion + pairing. If those are your spike foods, swap: half bun, open-faced, or skip the chips and choose fruit/veg + dip instead.
7. What’s a GD-friendly drink at a 4th of July party?
Water/sparkling water, infused water, unsweetened iced tea, or diet soda if you tolerate it. Skip (or limit) juice/sugary mocktails. If you do have something sweet, pair it with protein-packed food and check how your body responds.
8. Can I have dessert with gestational diabetes on a holiday?
Often yes — the trick is timing + portion + pairing. Many people do best with dessert after a balanced meal (protein/fiber first), or choosing a protein-based dessert (Greek yogurt bark, cheesecake cups).
